Fistula: a risk during childbirth

Lesions called fistulas result from complicated labour and are characterised by a tear between the vagina and the rectum or the bladder. Women thus become incontinent: incapable of controlling the flow of their urine and faeces.

The women and children are eager to attend informal gatherings, which are a proven awareness-raising tool.

Women who experience fistulas not only suffer from pain but are also the victims of social marginalisation. The only way of curing a fistula is surgical intervention. By facilitating operations for women without financial means, the project contributes to improving their life quality and their futures.

Alongside the curative aspect of this project, prevention is a primary preoccupation, as is the care and support of women suffering from obstetric fistulas. The beneficiaries are women of a reproductive age, and particularly those who are pregnant.

Deprived of medical assistance, giving birth can cost the life of a mother and her baby: a fact proven by the high rate of maternal mortality.

This project aims to contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality and morbidity rates. Interventions at different levels of the healthcare system are necessary in order to improve access to health services and the quality of care.
