Maria and Christiane want to have a child together, but the journey to get there is long and challenging. Together, they carry financial burdens, face systemic hurdles, and mourn lost pregnancies. As they travel between fertility clinics in Berlin, Denmark, and Ukraine, not only is their desire for a family put to the test, but so is their relationship. Over the course of ten years, Judith Beuth follows the couple in her documentary, sensitively and honestly portraying what it means when something that seems self-evident remains out of reach.
Many couples remain childless against their will, and for many others, the desire to have children goes unfulfilled due to personal, legal, or financial reasons. Eitherway, the topic receives little attention, and those affected usually bear the emotional, physical, and financial burden alone. Together with Katrin Schmitter (Kinderwunsch Peer-Support), we discuss this issue, break taboos, explore how to sensitively support those affected, and highlight the diversity of child-free lifestyles.
