Anita Maïmouna Neuhaus will open the evening with a performance.
The documentary follows Eva, a single mother, on the dangerous route between Kenya and South Sudan, which she travels as a long-haul truck driver. As a woman and mother behind the wheel of a truck, she earns a living for her family while simultaneously breaking with social conventions and gender norms. A film about self-determination, loneliness, and the emotional costs of economic independence.
What comes to mind when we hear that a single mother works as a long-haul truck driver? Do we treat her with respect or with prejudice? In a conversation with director Zipporah Nyaruri, we’ll explore the intersection of motherhood, the working class, and gender norms in both the Kenyan and Swiss contexts. We’ll also learn more about the 10-year journey behind the making of “Truck Mama.” The film screening and discussion will be held in English.
