The residents of the village of Kpélé Yaha, in rural areas of Togo, are particularly affected by poverty, limited access to healthcare services, and a lack of safe drinking water and sanitation facilities. Many families rely on unsafe water sources, while the local health center and primary school lack adequate hygiene infrastructure. This promotes the spread of diarrheal diseases and infections, leading to increased health risks, especially for children and pregnant women.
Many children regularly miss school due to illness or because they have to fetch water every day. Girls and women bear the main burden of this task, which limits their educational and income opportunities. Recurring illnesses create additional costs for families and worsen economic insecurity, while the lack of basic services encourages migration to urban areas.
The project takes a two-pronged approach. On one hand, access to safe drinking water is ensured through a deep well equipped with a solar pump, reliably supplying the health center and the school. On the other hand, hygiene and sanitation conditions are improved, and children, teachers, and community members are sensitized to health and hygiene issues to sustainably prevent disease.
In schools, latrines with handwashing stations are built, and safe sanitation facilities are installed. At the health center, existing infrastructure is rehabilitated, and a system for the safe disposal of medical waste is introduced. Training and participatory awareness activities complement the program to promote good hygiene practices and strengthen local responsibility for maintenance and operation.
Each year, the project reaches around 1,800 children in schools and over 1,000 patients and their families in the health center’s catchment area. By building local capacity and sustainable structures, it contributes in the long term to reducing disease, strengthening education, and improving living conditions and future prospects for the entire Kpélé Yaha community.
